Public Consultation for the Apparel Impact Institute’s Energy and Carbon Benchmark Methodology.

We are pleased to announce the opening of public consultation for the Apparel Impact Institute’s Energy and Carbon Benchmark, an important step toward advancing credible measurement of energy use and GHG emissions across the apparel and footwear sector.

how to submit feedback

Aii invites all stakeholders to review the draft benchmark and share their input by December 12. There are three ways to offer feedback:

Option 1: Via survey

We have developed a structured survey aligned with the key sections of the draft benchmark. You may comment on the sections most relevant to your expertise or interest. When completing the survey, please include any specific references (e.g., page or section numbers) to help us clearly interpret your feedback.
Fill out the survey

Option 2: General feedback via email

Alternatively, you can share overall feedback by emailing benchmark@apparelimpact.org with the subject line “Aii’s Energy and Carbon Benchmark Consultation.”
Send us an email

Option 3: Via webinar

We will also be hosting two webinars. Please join one of them to learn more about the benchmark, provide feedback, and receive answers to any questions you might have.
11/20, 8 AM PST / 3 PM GMT
11/25, 5 AM GMT / 1 PM HK
Following the consultation period, Aii will review all submissions and incorporate relevant feedback into the final version of the benchmark.

Technical review committee

We are seeking participants with expertise in energy systems, emissions estimation, methodology development, and benchmark creation to ensure the review process is robust and well-informed. The review is intended to be an ongoing process, conducted on a six-month cadence to ensure the benchmark methodology remains accurate and up to date.

If you are interested in joining the Technical Review Committee, please email us at benchmark@apparelimpact.org with the subject line “Carbon Benchmark Technical Review Committee.” In your message, briefly describe your relevant experience and interests in this area..

About the Publication

The Apparel Impact Institute’s Energy and Carbon Benchmark complements current methodologies by offering data on specific processes within facilities, allowing for year-on-year performance tracking and objective comparisons across facilities and regions. It is designed to serve as a transparent, independent reference that helps brands, manufacturers, and stakeholders align on consistent metrics and drive collective progress toward industry-wide decarbonization.

Building on existing data and tools, the benchmark consolidates existing GHG performance data from verified sources such as the Higg Index, technical experts, and direct mill assessments. At this stage, it functions as a voluntary reference point, not a compliance standard, intended to benefit manufacturers by highlighting strong performers and enabling data-driven decision-making. Ultimately, it supports a unified, industry-aligned approach to reducing emissions across the textile supply chain.
