Aii funded this project to address the efficiency of biomass as a transition fuel. The issue with biomass is that some facilities will require coal boilers to be fully replaced - a high-capex project for a transition fuel. Torrefacted biomass can be used in existing coal boilers without requiring costly retrofits, making it highly attractive as a transition solution. CSP funding supports de-risking across technical performance, financial viability, and market acceptance, which are key barriers to this innovative approach.
This project focuses on piloting the world’s first commercial-scale torrefaction plant using cotton stalks as feedstock to produce energy-dense biomass. The goal is to replace coal in textile steam boilers with a low-carbon, drop-in alternative that does not require major infrastructure changes, thereby enabling faster decarbonization of thermal energy use in the textile sector.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR MATURITY LEVELSThe scalability of this solution will be explored by biomass vendors who can then sell a more attractive product to the textile manufacturers.
