As part of its Low Carbon Thermal work, Aii commissioned research from the Carbon Trust exploring the applicability of energy storage in the textile sector.
The report provides an overview of available energy storage technologies and assesses their readiness for deployment in the sector. While several thermal storage solutions are promising, their commercial maturity remains low. In contrast, electrochemical storage (i.e. battery storage) could be a viable option for Tier 1 facilities in countries with variable tariff regimes and high penetrations of renewable energy in the grid. In such settings, electricity storage can help sites shift electricity consumption to lower-emission and lower-cost times, supporting decarbonisation and resilience.
Aii will continue to monitor thermal storage pilots in Tier 2 facilities, given the long-term potential of this solution to support industrial electrification.
